Custom plush toy pricing is driven by five variables: size, fabric, decoration, filling and order quantity. A 20 cm plush with simple embroidery costs a fraction of a 45 cm plush with printed fabric, magnetic accessories and licensed packaging — and the gap is usually larger than buyers expect.

The five cost drivers

Size sets fabric consumption and stuffing volume, and both scale faster than height because surface area grows quadratically. Fabric choice — short pile, long pile, minky, organic cotton — changes both material cost and sewing time. Decoration is the biggest swing: one-colour embroidery is inexpensive, while multi-colour screen printing or sublimation adds setup and per-piece cost. Filling quality affects hand feel and weight. Quantity amortises the fixed setup costs.

  • Size and surface area: the dominant variable above 30 cm
  • Fabric type and pile length: cost and durability trade-off
  • Decoration: embroidery, screen print or all-over sublimation
  • Filling: PP cotton grade, weighted beads, scented inserts
  • Order quantity: setup costs spread across units

Why quotes vary so much between suppliers

Two factories can quote the same drawing at very different prices because they are pricing different things: fabric weight, stuffing density, thread count, whether the eyes are embroidered or plastic, whether packaging is included, and whether testing is bundled. Comparing unit prices without a bill of materials is comparing nothing.

Ask each supplier to quote against an identical specification sheet — height, fabric, filling weight, decoration method, packaging and testing — and the comparison becomes meaningful.

Where buyers overspend

The three most common overspends are oversized plush for a fixed retail price, all-over printing used where a two-colour chest print would sell equally well, and premium packaging on low-margin promotional items. Each adds cost without adding conversion. Testing and carton optimisation, by contrast, protect margin and are worth paying for.

Getting an accurate quote quickly

Send a reference image or sketch, finished height, target quantity, destination market, packaging requirement and target price. With those six inputs a factory can quote within 1-3 days and flag which specification is pushing the price above target. A quote without those inputs is an estimate, not a budget.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Size, decoration and fabric type move unit cost more than labour.
  • ✓Always compare quotes against an identical specification sheet.
  • ✓Six inputs — image, size, quantity, market, packaging, target price — produce a usable quote in days.
